With the Mets adding Johan Santan yesterday the talking heads are declaring them the champions of the NL. Johan Santana is a great pitcher, he will not doubt continue to dominate at Shea. But is this the final piece that the Mets have been missing the past 7 years, could he take them back to the World Series? The Mets do have the most potent offense in the NL. David Wright and Carlos Beltran provide not only power but have respectable speed as well. Jose Reyes is one of the most exciting players in baseball and combines a hearty OBP with amazing speed. For all intents and purposes, if he's on first, he's on second.
Offense was not the problem with the Mets last season, the absence of pitching was. With the departure of Tom Glavine and the addition of Johan Santana the rotation is better, but the remaining four pitchers will no doubt be as hittable as they were last year. For all the teams in the NL thinking about mailing it in, think again...if your team can pitch and field on an above average level there is still hope for you.
